The first episode in the series, Worlds Falling Apart, is a really powerful one. When 50-year-old patient, Jeremy arrives in resus after crashing his mountain bike at speed, a CT scan throws a worrying discovery, when doctors find an existing tumour in his brain.
This brings back memories for Major Trauma Consultant, JJ (John-Joe), whose brother was previously diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour that quicky took his life, in 2001. This experience became JJ’s motivation to pursue a career in Trauma Medicine.
He has since built a successful career as a Major Trauma Consultant, using his experience to understand what patients and their relatives go through in A&E and the best way to handle these types of situations with patients.
Also in this episode, 37-year-old Ronalds has been rushed to resus after seriously lacerating his ankle with an angle grinder. Whilst Dr. Usman and the emergency medical team work quickly to save his leg, we hear about his life as a child in Latvia and the challenges he faced when starting a new life in the UK.
And 21-year-old, Owen, is in A&E with a dislocated shoulder after joining a mosh pit at a local music festival. As the medical team attempt to put it back in the socket, we hear how Owen has faced several serious medical problems in his life.
24 Hours In A&E begins Thursday 13th February at 9pm on Channel 4.
