5 has ordered Storms From Above (1 x 60) and Hurricanes From Above (1 x 60) from Good TV.

Weather affects everything we do, but with climate change causing weather to be more extreme, these documentaries explore the cutting-edge technology above the clouds revealing the most dramatic and dangerous weather like never before.

Watched over by the most advanced satellites ever created, high-altitude drones and weather planes, meteorology is undergoing a revolution. Today, weather experts are better at forecasting than ever. Storms From Above has been commissioned by 5’s Dan Louw whilst Hurricanes from Above has been commissioned by Kit Morey.

Produced by Elliot Reed’s indie Good TV, and with access to the UK Met Office, the films tell the story of how our planet’s weather is being policed by incredible flying laboratories, specially-equipped aeroplanes carrying out scientific analysis with no less than four tonnes of science equipment; high-altitude drones from Switzerland which are flying higher than any drone has ever flown; and, futuristic weather satellites tracking wildfires, floods, and hurricanes, sharing vital information with meteorologists on the ground to help minimise the destruction they cause.

Directed by Tom Peppiatt, Storms From Above chronicles how scientists are trying to control the weather, using cloud seeding to create rainfall. It’s a controversial topic, but it’s happening all over the world.

Peppiatt’s Hurricanes From Above gained access to the daring hurricanes scientists who fly into the eye of deadly storms, including some of the most deadly on record in last year’s 2024 Atlantic hurricane season. Hurricane Beryl intensified into a category 5, the earliest on record for a storm this extreme with winds reaching 165 miles per hour. Hurricane Helene was one of the deadliest since Katrina in 2005, and hurricane Milton developed into one of the most intense Category 5 hurricanes reaching 180 mph.

Elliot Reed, executive producer, said: ‘Our weather is becoming more extreme and storms more intense due to climate change, yet thankfully there is an army of weather experts around the world, one step ahead, innovating up above and creating faster and more accurate ways to predict the weather.”

‘Storms From Above’ and ‘Hurricanes From Above’ are distributed by Silverlining Rights.
