THE WINTER KING: HISTORICAL DRAMA 'AXED' AHEAD OF ITV1 DEBUT

The Winter King, ITV's drama produced by Bad Wolf which is a bold and revisionist take on well-loved Arthurian legends based on Bernard Cornwell’s Warlord Chronicles series, will not air on ITV1 until 2025, despite being available on ITVX since December 2023.


The series is set in the fifth century in a brutal land of warring factions and tribes where lives were often fleeting and follows Arthur Pendragon as he evolves from being an outcast and becomes a legendary warrior and leader. TVLine reports that the series has been axed by US streamer MGM+, though ITV have not commented on the reports.



The series stars Iain De Caestecker (The Control Room) as Arthur Pendragon, alongside Eddie Marsan (Deceit) as High King Uther, Ellie James (Giri/Haji) as Nimue, Nathaniel Martello-White (Small Axe) as Merlin, Stuart Campbell (Rogue Heroes) as Derfel.


Plus Daniel Ings (I Hate Suzie, The Crown) as Owain, Valene Kane (The Fall, Gangs of London) as Morgan, Jordan Alexandra (Mammals) as Guinevere and Simon Merrells (Good Omens, Knightfall) as Gundleus.



The ensemble cast also features Steven Elder (The King) as Bishop Bedwin, Andrew Gower (Outlander) as Sansum, Aneirin Hughes (Keeping Faith) as Gorfydd, Emily John (My Policeman) as Ceinwyn, Tatjana Nardone (Devils) as Ladwyss,Ken Nwosu (Killing Eve) as Sagramor, and Billy Postlethwaite (The Great) as Cadwys.



The Winter King will air on ITV1 in 2025 with the full series available now on ITVX.
