THE WITCHFINDER: BBC COMEDY AXED AFTER ONE SERIES

The Witchfinder was a BBC Two comedy series, which aired last Spring, following a witchfinder and his suspect on a road-free road trip through an England gripped by civil war, famine and plague.

The six-part series had a cast led by Tim Key and Daisy May Cooper, with wider casting including Jessica Hynes, Daniel Rigby, Tuwaine Barrett and Reece Shearsmith.

A spokesperson told The Sun confirmed the series will not be returning for a second outing: "Sometimes we have to make difficult choices and sadly The Witchfinder won’t be returning. We thank everyone involved in the show."

A failing witchfinder (Tim Key) transports a suspected witch (Daisy May Cooper) across 1640s East Anglia to a trial that could change his fortunes forever. But his captive is the worst possible travel companion: an inquisitive, uncouth woman whose ability to prick his pomposity and ask uncomfortable questions turns a straightforward journey into a life-changing ordeal.

A source told The Sun: "The Witchfinder kicked off with decent ratings but quickly plunged to a level where execs just couldn’t justify giving it a second season. It’s fair to say the concept was fairly niche so it was always going to be tricky finding an audience, even on BBC2. But although it won’t be coming back, its departure does make way for new comedy projects on the Beeb."

The Witchfinder was a Baby Cow production for BBC Two and is available now on BBC iPlayer.
